Margaret Qualley graced the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival with the dancerly presence of someone with a lifetime of ballet training. The actor joined her castmates—including Emma Stone, Hunter Schafer, Jesse Plemons, and Joe Alwyn—for the premiere of their film Kinds of Kindness, from director Yorgos Lanthimos.
“I’m feeling so grateful to be here at Cannes with this wonderful cast,” Qualley tells Vogue. “Having a film in the competition is so exciting.” To mark the occasion, the Chanel ambassador turned to none other than Virginie Viard to help her find the right look.
In a true full-circle moment, Qualley is wearing a piece from the balletic Chanel spring 2024 haute couture show, which she herself opened. But don’t expect her to outfit repeat—Qualley is trading in look 1 for look 54. “I first saw this dress at the beautiful haute couture show in Paris,” she says of the gauzy, pointe shoe pink dress, complete with a smocked bodice and drop waist. “It was my favorite collection of all time. Virginie did a ballet inspired couture show that was just absolutely gorgeous. Me and my stylist Patricia Villirillo both loved this one in particular.”
When searching for a premiere look, the actor is unfussy. She only has one non-negotiable: the dress has to fit her like a glove. “For me it’s all about the way something fits you, and so that’s why it’s so incredible to wear couture, because it’s all been made so specifically for the body. So I just tend to go for what would fit me best,” she says. She further customized her look with Chanel high jewelry, adding a starry headband and constellation-like earrings to her dreamy look.
Cannes kicks off Qualley’s whirlwind promotion for Kinds of Kindness, her second Lanthimos project, which hits theaters June 21. “I wish I could tell you what to expect, except, not to expect,” she teases. And as for any remaining free time in Cannes? “What free time?”
