Margot Robbie’s Latest Barbie Gown Is From an Iconic ’90s Collection

Margot Robbie’s Barbie style isn’t over quite just yet. Since the actor kicked off her press tour for the Greta Gerwig film last year, Robbie has been consistently wearing all things pink and shimmery on the red carpet—and she’s clearly still not tired of the doll-inspired looks.

Last night in Australia, the actor and producer continued this clear fashion focus at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, where she received the Trailblazer Award. While her corseted, draped column gown very much embodied the glamour of Barbie, there was much more to the Andrew Mukamal-styled look than meets the eye. The dress is a recreation of a design from an iconic Vivienne Westwood collection, which birthed many coveted corsets

Robbie’s dress is based on the “Pirate Bride” gown that first appeared on Westwood’s 1998 runway collection titled Tied to the Mast. The actor’s version was made custom for her, but very much remained true to the original look: covered in silver and pink Swarovski crystals, and featuring twisted, off-the-shoulder straps and a draped bodice. While the ’90s catwalk styling leaned way more theatrical—with a pirate eye patch and head scarf—Robbie forwent this in favor of sleek accessories, including barely-there sparkling jewels.
