Maruti Suzuki surpasses 2 million car deliveries via Indian Railways

Maruti Suzuki (MSIL) sped past a green milestone, surpassing 2 million car deliveries via Indian railways. This makes them the first Indian automaker to achieve this eco-feat, the company said Monday.

Rail usage soared over 600%, with dispatches jumping from 65,700 units (FY 2014-15) to 447,750 units (FY 2023-24). This shift translates to an estimated 10,000 metric tonnes less CO2 and 270 million liters of fuel saved over a decade. MSIL leverages railways for a greener, congestion-free future, the company said in a statement.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, Maruti Suzuki India significantly increased its use of railways for vehicle dispatches, reaching 21.5%.

This marks a substantial jump from about 5% in FY 2014-15, reflecting a more than six-fold increase over the past decade.”Through our focus on green logistics, we’ve achieved notable results, including cutting around 10,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions and saving about 270 million litres of fuel,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki.

With plans to nearly double production capacity from 2 million units to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, the company aims to boost railway-based dispatches to around 35% over the next 7-8 years. Takeuchi reaffirmed Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to India’s Net Zero emissions target by 2070.

Earlier this year, as part of the PM Gati Shakti initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility. This facility can dispatch about 300,000 vehicles annually. Another railway siding is being built at the Manesar facility and is expected to start operations soon.Maruti Suzuki’s move towards more railway transport not only enhances efficiency but also supports national goals for sustainable development and reduced carbon emissions in the automotive sector.
