He had kicked 15 goals in an eight-game stretch and was looming as a key player for the Demons ahead of the finals.
Melbourne missed his presence up forward in the finals, losing both their games to crash out in straight sets for the second year running.
However, while 2024 will largely involve rehabilitation for Melksham, the club have committed to re-select him in the upcoming rookie draft.
It will mark Melksham’s 14th season in the AFL and eighth at the Demons after beginning his career at Essendon.
He has already undergone situation on his knee, but would appear unlikely to make it back time to feature at AFL level next year.
Melksham has played 221 games across his career.
He is the eighth player to depart the club in a busy off-season.
Brodie Grundy (Sydney) and James Harmes (Western Bulldogs) were both traded, while James Jordon joined Sydney as a free agent.
Michael Hibberd and Luke Dunstan both retired, while Deakyn Smith and Kye Turner were both delisted.
They also brought in forward Shane McAdam, versatile tall Tom Fullarton and talented winger Jack Billings.
