Melbourne captain Max Gawn to miss multiple weeks with foot injury

Melbourne have been dealt a massive blow with captain Max Gawn sidelined for 2-3 weeks with a foot injury.

Gawn suffered the injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s 54-point win over West Coast when his foot cannoned into the body of emerging superstar Harley Reid while trying to kick the ball.

He played on after the incident but was eventually subbed out early in the last quarter.

Coach Simon Goodwin played down concerns over Gawn post-match, but the superstar was on crutches on Monday morning.

“It’s pretty sore, I must admit. I woke up very sore. Obviously, played the second half in a bit of distress,” Gawn said.

The club on Monday said scans showed Gawn suffered a “chip to the base of his right fibula”.

“While this is disappointing news for Max, fortunately he won’t require surgery,” general manager of AFL performance Alan Richardson said.

“Max is the ultimate professional and leader and we know he’ll attack his rehab and continue to play a pivotal role in our group over the next few weeks, albeit from the sidelines.

“While Max is the calibre of player that can’t be replaced easily, it provides an exciting opportunity for others to come in and play their role in our side.”

Gawn will miss crucial matches against Essendon and Fremantle and potentially the Giants as well, as the Demons look to keep in touch with the top eight.
