Melbourne university student pockets $4.8 million in lottery winnings

A Melbourne student is $4.8 million richer after winning The Lott’s Set For Life division one prize in Monday’s draw.

The man, aged in his 20s, will pocket $20,000 a month for the next 20 years.

“I have butterflies in my stomach, it’s so unexpected,” he told The Lott officials when they rang him with the good news.

“Thank you so much.”

The man said he purchased his ticket minutes before the draw closed and also decided last-minute to not use his own numbers.

“I bought the ticket at the very last minute and I nearly didn’t go through with it,” he said.

“Normally I would mark my own lottery numbers but I decided to switch it up to a QuickPick because my numbers weren’t doing much.”

The lucky student said he “decided to see how my ticket went” just before going to bed about 11pm and, when he saw he was a winner, he initially said he was “expecting division four or five, not division one”.

“I’ve already shared the news with my parents and some close friends, they were all so happy for me,” he told The Lott.

The Lott confirmed $20,000 will be deposited into the winner’s bank account on the 15th day of every month for the next two decades.

The student said he would likely use the money to pay off his degree and set up his future, but not before celebrating with his family.

“I haven’t thought of any immediate plans just yet, but I’m thinking I might invest the prize,” he said.

“I’m also studying my master’s degree and will need to pay off my student loans.

“Maybe I’ll buy a house, go on a holiday and also a buy a new car, but I need to have a think about it all.

“We have plans to celebrate tonight with a nice dinner.”

The Lott said the student becomes the 131st Set For Life division one winner nationally since the game began, and the sixth Set For Life division one winner so far this calendar year.

In 2023, there were 18 Set For Life division one winners across Australia who will receive $86.4 million over the next 20 years, according to The Lott.
