Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre flags major change

After decades of offering free parking for shoppers, Chadstone shopping centre will soon begin charging customers.

Since it first opened in 1960, the popular centre has allowed customers to park and shop all day, free of charge.

However, as of May 2024, customers will be charged after the first two hours of shopping at some of the centres carparks.

The changes will apply to more than a thousand spaces and new parking signs will be on display in spaces that are impacted.

But, not everyone is happy about the changes.

“It’s all adding up…. I think it’s terrible,” one local told 7NEWS.

“We are coming here and spending a lot of money already at the shops… so it should be free,” another added.

Experts, on the other hand, say the changes are necessary.

“It would make sense for Chadstone to extend the paid parking situation right across the board,” Retail Expert, Gary Mortimer, told 7NEWS.

“Particularly during those busy times like Christmas.”

The centre has not yet disclosed how much the parking is expected to cost.

“The Fashion Capital remains committed to providing visitors free carparking for the majority of our parking spaces,” a spokesperson for the shopping centre told 7NEWS.
