Tiktok seems to be planning to be your new messaging app. According to a report in The Verge, quoting Axios, Tiktok appears to be aiming to turn into a messaging platform. Currently Tiktok offers users the option to communicate, however, the ByteDance-owned company’s intent appears to be to make its messaging system a lot more powerful. ByteDance is reportedly hiring for a slew of roles on a team called ‘TikTok Social’.
The listings are not very clear, but they seem to make TikTok’s ambitions clear. “We are the messaging team on TikTok,” a listing for an engineering lead reads. “Our team’s mission is to facilitate meaningful user connections through TikTok’s messaging experience, which is still in its infancy,” adds the listing.
Another listing for a backend tech lead says that the role will include collaborating with teams across countries and regions “to deliver a distinctive TikTok social solution such as messaging.” The listing for a backend software engineer further adds that the Social team oversees “User Profile, Story, Inbox, Messaging, Follow, Like, Comment, Tag, etc.”
There’s also a position for product manager for the TikTok Social team. It says that the role requires “passion and curiosity for Social direction to create great impacts.”
It is, however, so far not clear the path that Tiktok is planning for its messaging app. It wants to be your go-to messaging app like WhatsApp or is aiming at youngsters with a Snapchat rival.
