Tech giant Meta’s large language model, Llama 2, will be available for free commercial and research use, directly competing with OpenAI’s GPT-4, which powers the popular ChatGPT tool, the social media company announced on Tuesday.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has partnered with Microsoft to release Llama 2 as an open-source AI model that can be used to power artificial intelligence tools.
“We believe in an open approach for the development of today’s AI models, especially in the generative space where technology is rapidly advancing. By openly sharing AI models, we can benefit everyone,” Meta stated in a blog post.
In February, Meta originally unveiled Llama 1. Since then, the company has received over 100,000 requests from researchers seeking access to it.
In addition to Microsoft, Llama 2 will be offered through Amazon Web Services (AWS), Huggin Face, and other providers.
Meta’s release of Llama 2 follows the growing popularity of OpenAI’s GPT-4-powered AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Microsoft has also collaborated closely with OpenAI, incorporating ChatGPT into the new version of its search engine, Bing.
As Meta advances with its AI system, it emphasizes responsible development. The company has conducted internal testing on its models and has engaged third parties to perform external adversarial testing.
In conjunction with the announcement, Meta has also published a research paper that discusses the encountered challenges and issues, as well as the mitigation strategies employed and future exploration plans.
