Michal Voss lays bare Carlton ‘disappointment’ after brutal preliminary final loss: ‘Ripped away’

Michael Voss says his Carlton side are not satisfied after fading out of a preliminary final in a loss to Brisbane that ended one of the AFL’s most incredible mid-season revivals.

The Blues kicked the first five goals at the Gabba to threaten a huge upset against the fancied Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

But the hosts rallied in a 11.13 (79) to 9.9 (63) victory to book a grand final clash with Collingwood at the MCG next Saturday.

The Blues were 15th after 13 rounds with just four wins, before winning 11 of their next 12 games to reach the season’s penultimate week for the first time since 2000.

But Voss, who captained Brisbane to their premiership three-peat 20 years ago, was far from satisfied.

“We’ll sit with the disappointment (but) 14 weeks ago it’s a completely different answer,” the coach – who was under huge pressure to keep his job earlier this season – said.

“As the season unfolded and form came together, we had that shift.

“It seemed like we could compete against the best and the last couple of weeks only reinforced that.

“We had a goal to come up here and get this job done. We fell short and are extremely disappointed.

“Credit to Brisbane, they bounced after quarter time … were able to turn the game around.

“For a first shot at it, it’s obviously good but the goal was clear and we’ve fallen short of it.”

Voss – who did not lose a preliminary final as a player – said he hadn’t tapped into his own storied playing career to inspire the side that threatened to book the first Carlton-Collingwood decider in the AFL era.

“The feeling of hurt, feeling you’re close, feeling like you’re getting an opportunity and having that ripped away from you, there’s no better experience than that,” he said.

“What I hope that turns into is that we’re a hungry football club and we want to figure at this end of the season more often.”
