Last week, the Michelin Guide added six new restaurants to its California guide. One of these was Bansang, a modern Korean restaurant in San Francisco that opened last spring.

“The cooking is an unapologetically contemporary take on Korean cuisine, readily incorporating ingredients like parmesan cheese and chorizo into the likes of kimchi fried rice or crispy rice cakes, fitting together seamlessly beside more classic offerings like mulhwe, a dish of raw seafood with a chilled fermented chili broth,” reads Bansang’s entry in the guide.

Bansang comes from chefs Jin Lim and Ethan Min, who worked at fine dining destinations including Atelier Crenn, Saison and Michael Mina. However, Bansang is more casual, opting to serve dishes a la carte rather than a set menu, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)

The Fillmore Street restaurant is the only Bay Area eatery to make the list of new California Michelin guide additions, with the rest being in Southern California. While this isn’t the same as earning a Michelin star or Bib Gourmand designation, restaurants on this list can be considered for these awards in the Michelin Guide later this year.

“We made it to the Michelin Guide!” Bansang shared on Instagram. “Thank you to all our amazing patrons for your unwavering support. We couldn’t have done it without you. Come celebrate with us at Bansang and taste the flavors that earned us this incredible recognition.”
