Credit: Instagram/Getty“The Centrelink employee asks you to verify your husband’s account by confirming how much money was paid into it fortnightly.“But you can’t answer that question – because you were never allowed access to the bank accounts.“You were never allowed access to a bank card, and you were never, ever, given access to the money that you made, working as a full-time nurse for 30 years.“Thirty years you were financially abused, and with no family in Australia you thought this behaviour was nothing short of normal.“This story is my mother’s story.”Moana Hope. Credit: Instagram/GettyWhen Hope posted a segment from her story on Instagram, her followers were astounded.“An incredible story – so sad – so wrong – and I have no doubt it still happens today,” one person wrote.“I’m so sorry this happened to your mum,” wrote another.“Wow, that is just so wrong,” one follower agreed.What is financial abuse?1800RESPECT, the National Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Counselling Service, defines financial abuse as a “form of domestic and family violence.”“Financial abuse is sometimes called economic abuse,” their website states.“It often involves someone using money in ways that hurt you.”Financial abuse can be considered a form of coercive control and can include the withholding of or prevention of access to money, stopping someone from getting a job, or even forcing someone to take out a loan they don’t want.“Financial abuse happens when someone uses money to control you, have power over you, scare or restrict you,” the RESPECT website states.“Someone who is financially abusive might also use things you own, or things you both own (such as property), to cause problems for you.“Sometimes you might not even be aware that it is happening to you.Moana Hope and her son, Ahi.
