Reduction in spam calls
The report notes that the percentage of mobile subscribers surveyed getting three or more spam calls on an average every day in February 2023, has dipped to 60% in the last 12 months.
In its findings, the company noted: “The dip, though marginal, is encouraging as it shows that proper implementation of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) directive can bring about further improvement in containing spam calls to mobile subscribers.”
However, despite being registered in the do-not-disturb (DND) list, 90% of respondents reported that they still receive unwanted, pesky, sales/promotional phone calls. Meanwhile 5% of the participants stated that they do not get them. This suggested that the DND list is “still not working for the consumers”.
Numbers used for the spam calls
As per the report, 76% of responders noted that the highest number of spam phone calls they have received have been from the financial services and real estate sectors.
On the other hand, 48% of participants claimed that they get most of the spam phone calls from mobile numbers that seem to belong to individuals (personal numbers).
Meanwhile, 36% mobile subscribers stated that they come from different mobile numbers that seem to belong to companies/brands. Another 7% of respondents mentioned that the calls that they receive come from a centralised company landline number. Also, 2% of respondents stated that the calls seem to be from a centralised company toll-free number.
