Mother of Jason Galleghan shares heartbreaking anguish over son’s alleged fatal assault at Parramatta District Court

The mum of a Sydney boy who was allegedly bashed to death has revealed her agony, questioning why none of the 11 people charged over their involvement in his death sought help for her son.
Jason Galleghan, 16, died after he was allegedly beaten at a home on Perigee Cl in Doonside, in August 2021.
The teen was allegedly lured there by a large group, including children, who suspected him of stealing some Apple AirPods.

Eleven people have been charged over their roles in the alleged murder, including 37-year-old Stacey Pale, who faced a sentence hearing at Parramatta District Court on Tuesday.
Pale pleaded guilty in February this year to one charge of being a principal in the second degree to causing grievous bodily harm to person with intent.
In her victim impact statement, Jason’s mum Rachel Galleghan questioned why Pale didn’t help her son.

“I ask myself every day … why didn’t any of (the 11 people involved) do anything to help,” she told the court.
“I believe (Pale) understood what was going to happen … and she did nothing.
“She could have helped Jason,” Galleghan said through tears.
“She could have called out for help or called the police.
“Instead, she chose to lie in an attempt to cover up what was happening.
“I’m in complete agony knowing my son could have been saved. It haunts me every second of the day.”
The 16-year-old was found unresponsive with head and chest injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital where he later died.

Galleghan told the court she remembered feeling sick after receiving the phone call from police informing her that Jason was in hospital.
Rachel spent the next four days beside her son in hospital before making the decision to donate five of his organs.
“I couldn’t comprehend my son was going to die,” she said.
“I really wanted this whole experience to be a terrifying nightmare.
“My son had such a wonderful life head of him.”
Rachel described Jason as a “kind and caring person” who had “the biggest heart”.
He had an infectious laugh and was obsessed with the beach, his mum said.

“I truly feel he has been robbed of so much, I have been robbed.
“I’ll never been the same person again without my son.
“I miss Jason so much that it hurts inside, I think about him every second of the day.
“I am completely broken.”
Co-offender Harley Bartolo, 29, was sentenced over his role in the alleged bashing in February.
Nine other people remain before the courts.
In sentencing Bartolo, Judge Ian Bourke was scathing of the sustained bashing, which took over half an hour as multiple alleged assailants kicked, punched and slammed Jason’s head into a bedroom wall.
“The agreed facts can only be described as horrific. Many, in fact most people, would find it hard to believe that a group of humans, some of them children, could be capable of such behaviour,” the judge said.
“The attack can only be described as a sustained frenzy of savagery and cruelty of the highest order.”
Bartolo was sentenced to a maximum of 25 months in prison, with a non-parole period of 17 months which expired in March.
