OAKLAND – Traffic on the Bay Bridge was disrupted on Tuesday afternoon when a naked driver stopped her car near the toll plaza, exited the vehicle, and fired a pistol at other vehicles, as stated by the California Highway Patrol.
Around 4:40 p.m., the CHP received a report of a reckless driver with a firearm on eastbound Interstate 80, according to CHP Officer Andrew Barclay.
The same driver was later seen stopping on the Bay Bridge, getting out of her car with a knife, and yelling at other drivers, as witnesses reported. She then returned to her car, drove past the toll plaza, and exited her car once again.
According to witness reports, this time the driver was naked and carrying a pistol. She allegedly fired shots into the air before shooting at cars behind her.
There have been no immediate reports of injuries.
CHP officers found the driver walking eastbound on the right shoulder of the Interstate 880 transition ramp. They instructed her to drop the firearm, which she complied with. She was then detained without any further incident.
An ambulance was called and the driver was taken to a hospital for medical and psychiatric evaluations, said Barclay.
All lanes of eastbound I-580 were closed from the toll plaza to the I-880 transition ramp from 5:25 p.m. to approximately 5:40 p.m., when four lanes were reopened, according to Barclay. The I-880 transition ramp remained closed until around 6:05 p.m.
