MP demands accountability from all governments in wake of Calgary Stampede sex abuse settlement

All levels of government must hold management of the Calgary Stampede accountable for their handling of sexual abuse at one of their performance schools, according to George Chahal, a Liberal MP for Calgary Skyview. Chahal emphasized that if taxpayer dollars are being provided to the Stampede, safeguards must be in place. Currently, neither the municipal nor provincial governments have announced any financial implications for the popular rodeo and midway event. The federal government did provide $14 million in grants to the Stampede during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and 2022, but they do not provide ongoing funding. A partial settlement was recently reached in a class-action lawsuit claiming that the Stampede allowed a staff member at their Young Canadians School of Performing Arts to groom and abuse boys. The abuse dates back to at least 1992, and the organization’s CEO, Joel Cowley, admitted that they should have acted on the allegations sooner. Chahal has called for accountability and transparency from the Stampede, stating that the public deserves to know what happened and someone should be held responsible. The lawsuit is still ongoing, and damages will be determined later this summer. Chahal is the only politician in Alberta so far to call for financial consequences for the Stampede.
