Former MTV reality television star Sarah Becker has died aged 52.

Becker first appeared in the spotlight after joining the cast of MTV’s The Real World: Miami in 1996, with family confirming her death earlier last week to TMZ.

Becker, from California, had recently moved to Illinois to care for her mother and sister before being involved in a skateboarding accident, with family confirming she had been struggling with mental health issues as a result.

She joined the cast of The Real World: Miami, the show’s 5th season, when she was 25 and had previously worked in a comic book store before coming on the show.

Becker’s season marked the first time the cast was given a task to complete throughout the season, and were given $US50,000 to start a business, according to TMZ.

The cast failed in the challenge due to conflict and disorganisation.

A former “roommate” from the show, Flora Alekseyeun, posted a tribute to Instagram, saying she “could not believe” Becker had died.

“I am beyond myself and sad to just hear that my roommate Sarah died. I can’t believe this,” she said.

“She was the most selfless person I knew. She was always kind and helpful to everyone.”
