Nameberry’s Expert Unveils the Most Divisive Baby Names of 2023

The most “polarising” baby names of 2023 have been revealed, including Bodhi, Karen, and Cohen. Writer Emma Waterhouse from Nameberry compiled a list of names that were deemed offensive, unfashionable, or had racist connotations. In a TikTok video, Waterhouse explained that these names were the top answers from a survey conducted on the website. For boys, Azriel, Bodhi, Cohen, and Gunnar made the list. Azriel is of Hebrew origin and means “God is my help”, but it is also the name of the Angel of Death in Judaism and Islam. Bodhi, a name that was once popular, has religious connotations related to Buddhist enlightenment. Cohen, a Hebrew name meaning “priest”, is considered controversial and offensive to use as a given name. Gunnar, a traditional Norse name meaning “bold warrior”, is favored over the alternative spelling “Gunner”, which can be associated with violence due to the issue of gun violence in the US. For girls, Dixie, Karen, and Pippa are names to avoid. Dixie lost popularity due to its association with slavery and white privilege. Karen, although an old-school name, has become a pejorative term to describe a stereotypical middle-class woman. Pippa, associated with Pippa Middleton, has a vulgar meaning in Italian, Swedish, and Polish. The names on the list have caused surprise and shock among viewers of the video.
