Whether in a pool, a bathtub, or a lake, drowning can occur quickly and silently. It is a leading cause of injury-related deaths for young children in Canada. According to a 2023 report from the Lifesaving Society, 96 percent of drownings among children under five years old happen due to absent or distracted supervision. Stephanie Bakalar, corporate communications manager for the Lifesaving Society Ontario, stressed the importance of constant vigilance. She urged parents not to take their eyes off their children, even for a split second, and to assign someone else to watch them if necessary. Bakalar explained that most drowning incidents involving children happen in residential settings, such as backyard swimming pools and bathtubs, but emphasized that any body of water can be dangerous without proper supervision.
