Four weeks before a family dog killed a five-week-old baby, the American Staffy mauled a neighbour’s dog, police have revealed.

The baby boy died on Sunday after being attacked by the dog in the middle of the night.

Emergency services were called to a home at Jeffs Close at Kariong around 2.20am on Sunday.

Officers and paramedics performed CPR on the baby but he could not be revived.

“This is a matter of tragic proportions,” Brisbane Water Police District Commander Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson told reporters.

The American Staffy, which was registered, was seized by the council following the attack.

In a separate incident four weeks ago, the Staffy mauled a neighbour’s dog after it got into the backyard of the family’s home, Jobson added.

The Staffy is expected to be euthanised on Sunday, or in the coming days.

‘Absolutely traumatic’

“Incidents like these do bear heavy on first responders,” Jobson said.

“They are no doubt shaken by the incident.

“Anything to do with children, particularly of this nature, is absolutely traumatic.”

No one else was injured in the attack.

The baby’s parents were home at the time and were treated for shock and distress.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
