The San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback competition is inching closer and closer to an end.
This news comes just over four months after Purdy underwent surgery for the elbow injury he suffered in San Francico’s NFC championship game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Niners have been fairly optimistic about the young quarterback’s recovery timeline, which has so far proved to be rather speedy.

Even as he’s been on ice throughout most of this offseason, Purdy has been the team’s presumptive starter for some time. Lynch told reporters about as much earlier this year, provided that the quarterback was healthy enough to play. Of the three options the team has at quarterback, it makes the most sense. Trey Lance hasn’t shown enough in the limited reps he’s gotten — which became even more limited after his foot injury last season — and Sam Darnold hasn’t shown much in his career 21-34 record over five seasons.
Purdy, meanwhile, won eight straight games after beginning the year as a third-stringer, with his only loss coming in a game where he suffered an injury that left him unable to throw.
Roster consistency is always a good thing, especially at quarterback, and this latest bit of news brings the Niners closer to their ideal situation.
