Nishad vs Nishad: BJP Ally and Former MP Clash to Represent Crucial UP Community within the NDA

Lucknow: In the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there is a political battle emerging within the Nishad community in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The community, consisting of fishermen and other river-related occupations, is divided between two leaders. Sanjay Nishad, the fisheries minister in the BJP-led UP government and president of the Nishad Party, claims to be the rightful leader of the Nishads. Meanwhile, Jai Prakash Nishad, a BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member, is organizing a “Nishad mahakumbh” to rally the community and ensure their participation in education, economics, and politics. The two leaders have been indirectly criticizing each other, and their supporters had a face-off at a recent press conference. The BJP has distanced itself from the event, although it reportedly has tacit support. The Nishad community comprises 22 sub-castes and holds significant influence in over 70 constituencies in Purvanchal. The community makes up 14% of Uttar Pradesh’s population. Both leaders are vying for the support and allegiance of the Nishad community ahead of the upcoming elections.
