Marvel’s official voice cast for What If…? doesn’t list Tom Holland, suggesting another actor will voice the show’s zombie-hunting Spider-Man.
It appears Tom Holland won’t be voicing the zombie-hunting Peter Parker/Spider-Man on Marvel’s animated What If…? series.
A press released issued by Marvel Studios confirms more than 50 Marvel Cinematic Universe actors are reprising their roles for the show, including the longtime MCU mainstays Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). However, Holland is not listed among their ranks, suggesting someone else will be lending their vocals to What If…?‘s version of the web-slinger.
What If…?‘s promotional material has revealed an iteration of Spider-Man, referred to as “Zombie Hunter Spidey,” will battle the zombie-fied versions of Captain America, Iron Man and other Avengers in one of the show’s episodes. This multiverse storyline appears to be loosely based on Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips’ Marvel Zombies, a five-issue limited series that ran from December 2005 to April 2006 and saw various character from Marvel’s comic books transform into flesh-eating zombies after being infected by a virus from another dimension.
Despite the rumors of his return, Marvel’s press release also confirms Robert Downey Jr. won’t be voicing Tony Stark/Iron Man on What If…? Other noteworthy absences from the series’ official cast list include Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch), Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer). Bautista later tweeted he was “never asked” to appear on What If…?, despite Drax’s prominence in the show’s marketing.
Inspired by the Marvel comic book anthology launched in 1977, What If…? explores alternate timelines that show what would’ve happened if major moments in MCU history played out differently. “It’s an anthology,” executive producer Brad Winderbaum said. “[Jeffrey Wright’s] The Watcher introduces us each week to these alternate storylines — each a kind of cautionary tale in the spirit of ‘The Twilight Zone.’ We bounce around genres and tone — some episodes will be dramatic; some will be tragic or comedic.”
It’s speculated but not confirmed that Marvel Studios’ deal with Sony to share the Spider-Man rights prevent Holland from reprising his role on an animated project like What If…? Be that the case or not, What If…? will premiere on Disney+ on Aug. 11, followed by Holland’s return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home later this year.
