NPR: Bipartisan Disapproval for Rep. Van Orden Following Use of Inappropriate Language Towards Teen Senate Pages

Derrick Van Orden spoke in Waukesha, Wisconsin on August 5, 2022. The Republican congressman has refused to apologize for his outburst in Washington, insisting that he was protecting the integrity of the Capitol Rotunda. Rep. Van Orden said he was enraged after witnessing a group of high school-age Senate pages “defiling” the Capitol and treating it like a “frat house common room”. The teenagers were lying on the floor to take pictures of the historic Rotunda dome. Van Orden confronted them, using profanities and derogatory language. Since the incident, he has refused to apologize, stating that he was protecting the integrity of the Capitol Rotunda. Some senior members of Congress criticized his behavior and lack of remorse, while others poked fun at the incident. This is not the first time Van Orden has shown a short temper, as he was previously accused of threatening a library staffer in 2021.
