NPR: Jeffrey Gibson Makes History as First Indigenous Artist with Solo Show at Venice Biennale

Artist Jeffrey Gibson will represent the U.S. at the Venice Biennale in 2024, becoming the first Indigenous artist to have a solo exhibition in the U.S Pavilion at the international art event. According to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the government body responsible for co-curating the U.S. Pavilion, alongside Oregon’s Portland Art Museum and SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico, Indigenous artists have not been featured in the U.S. Pavilion since 1932. The State Department’s records of the U.S. Pavilion exhibitions date back to when it was built in 1930. However, Indigenous artists have shown their work more broadly in Venice over the years. Curator Kathleen Ash-Milby, one of the co-commissioners for Gibson’s work, explained that the previous presentation of Native American art in the U.S. Pavilion in 1932 was ethnographic in nature and did not focus on the individuality of the artists. Gibson, known for his wide-ranging, inclusive, and critical approach to art-making, was selected for his ability to connect with his culture and different communities while examining history through a critical lens. Gibson, a MacArthur “Genius” Grant winner, has exhibited widely across the country, including major solo exhibitions and his work is in the collections of esteemed institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The details of Gibson’s contribution to the 2024 Biennale, titled “the space in which to place me,” are yet to be revealed.
