A Sydney high school student suffered serious injuries when a muck-up day stunt went wrong in the city’s northwest.

A large group of students from Oak Hill College were gathered on First Farm Drive in Castle Hill, where they were throwing water balloons when the 17-year-old was struck by a car on Wednesday afternoon.

7NEWS understands the driver, who police say was on his P-plates, was swerving to dodge the water balloons when he hit the 17-year-old with such force the boy was thrown into the air.

“There were probably about 40 kids on the street and then this woman came out and told me this kid had got hit by a car,” one resident told 7NEWS.

“There were kids everywhere. There was a bunch of them with their shirts off,” another said.

Police said CareFlight and NSW Ambulance paramedics transferred the boy to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“The 18-year-old P-plate Driver of the vehicle is assisting with inquiries at Castle Hill Police Station,” police said.

Hills Police are working with the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit to investigate.
