Oil leak causes multi-car pileup in Egypt: 32 killed, over 60 injured in road crash

At least 32 people have been killed in a multi-car pileup that was caused because of an oil leak on a highway in Egypt’s Beheira Governorate, according to authorities. Over 60 people have been reported injured in the road crash, revealed Egypt’s health ministry.
As per a report by Al Jazeera, the collision took place in morning fog on Saturday when a passenger bus on its way to Cairo slammed into a parked vehicle on the highway linking the Egyptian capital, Cairo, and the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.Other cars slammed into the bus, with some even catching fire.
The state-run al-Ahram newspaper said there was “a horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natroun”, about 160 km (100 miles) north of Cairo. Al-Ahram quoted police sources as saying an oil leak from one vehicle caused the collision with some of the vehicles catching fire as a result. A total of 29 vehicles were reportedly part of the crash, while six, including a passenger bus, were gutted by fire.

The report also revealed that “at least 18” people were burned to death in the accident. A similar accident occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana in United States that was caused due to ‘super fog’, resulting in a massive 168-car pileup on the highway leaving eight people dead and around 63 injured.

Driving in fog can be extremely tricky given the fact that the visibility can drop down significantly, especially on wide, open highways. TOI Auto urges its readers to reduce their vehicle’s speed and drive attentively in a similar situation, and also follow other traffic rules including lane driving.
