Old Topping Snake Eyes, Black Widow, and Space Jam 2 in Opening Weekend

0 9

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, Old, is topping the box office in its opening weekend. The film will surpass the latest G.I. Joe, Marvel, and Space Jam movies to climb to the top of the chart. All around, the box office is returning to typical pandemic-era numbers. After a few big summer openings, Old will top the box office with approximately $15 million, a far cry from Black Widow‘s $80-million debut two weeks ago. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins looks likely to land in second place with $14 million. Despite the big opening, Black Widow suffered a severe enough second-weekend drop to earn a formal scolding from theater owners. The Marvel Studios movie finds itself in third place in its third weekend. Space Jam: A New Legacy is in fourth place.

Old is receiving mixed reviews from critics. ComicBook.com‘s Patrick Cavanaugh called it “bizarre and baffling” in his review:

“Even though Old might be one of Shyamalan’s biggest misses, his various other stories have earned him at least a few more years of optimism, as even he would likely agree that not all art is for everyone. Old assuredly has some important themes that will resonate with select audiences, yet it’s ultimately another example of just how strong of a director Shyamalan can be while his scripting abilities fail to reach those visual heights, as whatever potential this story had, it is all completely squandered with outlandish and inhuman performances. What could have been his most humanistic outing ends up being his most alien, which says a lot for a filmmaker who has literally delivered us movies about aliens.”

The movies rounding out the box office top-10 list this weekend include the latest Fast Saga movie, the Anthony Bourdain documentary, The Boss Baby sequel, The Forever Purge, and more. Keep reading to see this week’s complete list.
