OM System, the camera company previously known as Olympus, is now selling packs of branded, ready-made, Japanese curry through its online Rakuten store in Japan.

As reported by Asobinet, OM System recently started selling outdoor goods through its online store (which opened last April) as the adventure photography enthusiast is also very likely an outdoor and backpacking fan — there is an overlap and expanding its offerings in this way does make sense.

OM System-branded hoodie, collapsible trash can, as well as gloves, hats, and lightweight jackets were already available, but now the company is expanding into food.

“A satisfying volume at 200 grams per serving. It has a refreshing flavor so you won’t get tired of eating it. Mature, with a hint of spice.”

The OM System Curry is a Dry Keema-style with a “medium spicy” level of heat. Dry keema is a style of curry that is even more influenced by Indian and South Asian cuisine than the more typical wet curry the country is better known for. It’s usually made with ground beef or pork and served over rice and the OM System curry sticks pretty closely to the expected in this regard, although it uses a mix of minced chicken and beef tongue as the protein. While it is described as a dry keema curry, the photos make it look a bit wetter than is typical of the style.

“[A] dry keema curry with a variety of spices that condense the flavor and richness of meat to whet your appetite,” the company’s website describes. “The two types of meat — chicken and beef tongue — melt in your mouth and are full of flavor and richness.”

A spoonful of curry with visible chunks of meat hovers over a plate of rice. The background text in Japanese translates to: "A delicious and rich taste spreads in your mouth with soft, tender chicken and beef tongue.
“The two types of meat, chicken and beef tongue, melt in your mouth and are full of flavor and richness.”

The dry curry style was selected because it doesn’t easily spill when opened, making it better suited for outdoor situations. The “dry” term doesn’t mean actually dried, though, as the heating instructions are identical to the fully-made packets of Japanese curry that are widely available: submerge the entire packet in a boiling water bath for between three to five minutes, open carefully, and pour out onto a plate. The packet cannot be microwaved.

“Serving suggestion. Toppings such as vegetables are not included in the product.”

The curry is manufactured in Japan by Sunhouse Foods, more colloquially known as simply “House” on labels. The company is well known for making a variety of Japanese foods including curry.

The OM System Curry comes in packs of two, 200-gram bags and is available for 1,200 yen, or about $7.50. PetaPixel is attempting to acquire some and will be doing a full review should it succeed.
