The day after Jan. 6, 2021, former President Donald Trump released a video denouncing the rioters who attacked the Capitol building. However, any sign of regret or reprimand has since disappeared, as Trump now downplays the violence and supports the rioters. He has even pledged to pardon a “large portion” of the Jan. 6 defendants if he wins a second term. Trump’s evolution on the issue coincided with a shift in public opinion among Republicans, who increasingly justified the anger that led to the attack. Despite overwhelming evidence that the mob was comprised of Trump supporters, he continues to spread false claims about who was responsible for the violence, including antifa and Black Lives Matter.
