Sukhjeet Singh, Akashdeep Singh, and Mandeep Singh also scored a goal each in India’s dominant victory over China in their first match of the Asian Champions Trophy (ACT).
Chennai: India’s Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Varun Kumar both scored two goals as they led India to a 7-2 victory over China in the opening match of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament. The match took place at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium on Thursday. Harmanpreet converted penalty corners in the 5th and 8th minutes, while Varun scored in the 19th and 30th minutes. Sukhjeet Singh, Akashdeep Singh, and Mandeep Singh also scored a goal each for India. China’s goals came from Wenhui E and Jiesheng Gao.
India had a strong start, scoring two goals within the first eight minutes. Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner in the 5th minute, followed by another penalty corner goal in the 8th minute. Sukhjeet scored in the 15th minute. Akashdeep added another goal in the 16th minute. China managed to score two goals through Wenhui in the 18th minute and Gao in the 25th minute. Varun scored his first goal in the 19th minute, and his second came in the 30th minute. India ended the first half with a 6-2 lead after Varun converted another penalty corner in the last minute.
In the second half, India continued their dominance. Mandeep scored a goal in the 40th minute, making it 7-2 for India. Despite having a few penalty corners, neither team managed to score in the third and fourth quarters.
India will face Japan in their next match on Friday.
