Outcome decided for Sydney P-plater involved in fatal high-speed crash that claimed the life of teenager Nicholas Hoenselaars in Leppington

A p-plate driver who caused the death of a teenager in a high-speed crash on Christmas Eve will spend a minimum of two and a half years in jail. In December 2020, 18-year-old Nicholas Hoenselaars was the passenger in a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 18-year-old Savyo Khamou when it crashed into a power pole at high speed. The crash occurred in Leppington, following a police pursuit. The impact was so severe that the car split in two and both teenagers were thrown from the vehicle. Hoenselaars died at the scene, while Khamou was taken to the hospital under police guard. Khamou pleaded guilty to manslaughter, as well as charges of not stopping in a police pursuit and speeding more than 30km/h over the speed limit. On Monday, Judge Stephen Hanley sentenced Khamou, now 20, to five years in prison, with a non-parole period of two and a half years. Judge Hanley emphasized the tragic loss of life and stated that the offense displayed no regard for the victim’s life. He also acknowledged that Khamou expressed remorse and had good prospects for rehabilitation. The court heard that Khamou had been caught speeding two months prior to the crash and had held a provisional license for less than a year.
