This act led to protests in Iraq, with demonstrators breaking into the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad and setting fire to it. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered the expulsion of the Swedish ambassador and the withdrawal of the Iraqi charge d’affaires from Sweden. However, more protests are expected in Baghdad. In Sweden, public gatherings are protected by the constitution, and the country does not have blasphemy laws. The Swedish police generally grant permission for demonstrations based on the likelihood of disruptions or safety risks. For Muslims, mistreating or burning the Quran is seen as a desecration of their holy text. Despite his decision to cut diplomatic relations with Sweden, Sudani called on Iraqi protesters to maintain peaceful and constitutionally protected protests and urged security forces to protect public and private property. Some 20 people were arrested in connection with the storming of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, including journalists who were later released without charges. Iran also planned demonstrations and summoned the Swedish ambassador, while Hezbollah called for a demonstration in Lebanon. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey also criticized the desecration, and the prime minister of Pakistan called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to intervene. This was not the first time the Iraqi Christian in Sweden desecrated a Quran, as he also burned the holy book outside a mosque in Stockholm last month, sparking widespread condemnation.
