Patent Images Reveal the Next-Generation Chinese Hatch: MG 3

During the same week that spy photos of the new MG-branded light hatch were published, the vehicle has now been revealed through a patent filing. The filing, which was published on August 3 by the European Union Intellectual Property Office, showcases the exterior of the light hatch. The vehicle does not have a name or dimensions listed, but it is believed to be the long-awaited replacement for the MG 3, as indicated by the MG badge. The front end styling has become more aggressive, similar to the MG 5 that is currently available in Australian showrooms. The grille is lower and wider, giving it a “shark nose” effect. The bumper has sportier detailing and the overall overhang appears longer compared to the current model. The body of the new MG 3 is more curvaceous than the current model, with a crease that arcs from the headlights to the rear doors. The rear bumper is also more sharply detailed. Patent images do not show the interior, but a recently spied prototype indicates that the door trims will feature more sharply creased detailing and diamond-patterned cloth upholstery. The dashboard of the prototype was not visible. The next-generation MG 3 is expected to launch before the end of 2024 and will likely stick with petrol power. There may be a possibility of a mild-hybrid or hybrid option. MG currently offers a hybrid version of the ZS SUV in Thailand. There are no plans for an electric version of the new MG 3 due to the high cost associated with developing a small electric car. Despite its popularity, the MG 3 does not have an ANCAP rating but holds a significant share of its segment in Australia. MG has no plans to stop offering affordable models like the MG 3.
