Pence confirms he won’t testify against Trump in trial

Former Vice President Mike Pence stated that he has no intention of testifying against former President Trump during the trial. This comes after Trump was indicted on federal charges related to his attempts to retain power after losing the 2020 election.

During an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Pence said, “I have no plans to testify, but people can be confident we’ll obey the law. We’ll respond to the call of the law, if it comes, and we’ll just tell the truth.”

In April, Pence appeared before a federal grand jury in relation to the case, after initially challenging a subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith. Although the scope of his testimony was limited by a federal judge, the former vice president was ultimately compelled to testify.

Pence added, “We challenged in court the scope of any testimony that I could provide because, as president of the Senate, the Constitution provides me with the protections that are afforded to members of Congress. We won that at the lower court level and, ultimately, we responded to a subpoena.”

Trump was charged on Tuesday with four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstruction of an official proceeding. He pleaded not guilty in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

The indictment included new details, such as contemporaneous notes taken by Pence about his conversations with Trump during that time. It stated that Trump put pressure on Pence multiple times to reject or send back electoral votes during the certification of the election on January 6th. Trump allegedly referred to Pence as “too honest” for maintaining that he lacked the authority to reject the results.
