Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg listed off several instances where Donald Trump “broke his promise” on Sunday but named two that the former president kept to Americans.
“He kept his promise to destroy the right to choose in this country and he kept his promise on tax cuts for the rich,” Buttigieg told Fox News host Shannon Bream.
“And if you want to know what a second Trump term would be like, I would start by looking at those rare promises that he actually managed to keep.”
He later reminded Bream that Republicans have expressed interest in a national abortion ban before she declared that Trump has “disavowed” such a move.
“Yeah, he’s disavowed a lot of things. I don’t believe him because he lies all the time,” Buttigieg replied.
Buttigieg, who is reportedly being considered as Vice President Kamala Harris’ potential running mate, went to bat for the presumptive Democratic nominee after telling The New York Times this weekend that he didn’t think it’d be “appropriate” to say whether he’d make a good VP pick.
Buttigieg knocked an op-ed in The Times that casted doubt on Harris’ candidacy, telling Bream the idea that somebody hasn’t been tested or vetted when she’s been VP for nearly four years “just doesn’t make any sense.”
The Transportation secretary then compared Harris’ stance on abortion to Trump’s views, pointing to a pledge he made as a 2016 candidate to appoint justices to the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“One of the few promises he actually kept, by the way. You know, he didn’t keep his promise of 6% economic growth. He didn’t keep his promise to drain the swamp to deal with,” said Buttigieg as he ripped Trump’s record in his first term.
“Well, he did have a pandemic to deal with,” Bream interjected.
“Well, but even before the pandemic, even before the pandemic, America went into a manufacturing recession which really hurt places like where I come from in the industrial Midwest,” Buttigieg hit back.
Buttigieg added that Trump broke his promise to pass an infrastructure bill and his promise to the Jan. 6 mob that he’d be by their side in a march to the Capitol.
