Misha Burlatsky, born in Moscow in 1958 into a family of an opera singer, underwent a journey of diverse experiences. After relocating to Gorky in 1961, where he spent the majority of his life, Burlatsky embraced a myriad of roles, including military service, watchman, mechanic, graphic designer, university student, poet, and advertising video director on TV. However, his affinity for photography remained constant.
In 2009, Burlatsky delved into mastering the wet collodion process. By 2010, he made a significant move from Moscow to St. Petersburg, establishing his private sanctuary, the “Photoroom on Pestel 13.” Self-identifying as a domestic sphere worker, Burlatsky’s space stands open for anyone seeking to create an artistic portrait. What sets the Photo Cabinet on Pestel 13 apart from conventional photo studios is the theatricalization of the process.
Here, the model actively engages in every stage, witnessing the negative production and, post-shoot, the emergence of the image in a darkroom. Burlatsky employs large-format photographic equipment and antique optics in his work, adding a timeless and captivating dimension to his artistic pursuits.
