‘Playing the series or not is a matter of…’: Jay Shah on Mohammed Shami’s participation in Border-Gavaskar Trophy | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: India’s ace pacer Mohammed Shami‘s participation in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year is contingent on a final fitness assessment from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
Shami, recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the ODI World Cup last November, is currently in rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru.
Shami has been making significant strides in his recovery process, having resumed bowling last month. He has been steadily increasing his bowling workload and has reported no pain, which bodes well for his potential return to competitive cricket.”Shami playing the Australia series or not is a matter of his fitness, and a decision will be taken after the NCA report,” Shah told ANI. This statement underscores that Shami’s participation in the high-stakes series depends entirely on his complete recovery.
Shami’s track record in Australia demonstrates his importance to the Indian squad, having taken 31 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 32.16, including two five-wicket hauls. His ability to exploit Australian conditions makes him a key asset as India aims to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australian soil.

In addition to updates on Shami’s fitness, Shah confirmed that VVS Laxman will continue as the head of the NCA. Laxman, who assumed the role in December 2021, has been instrumental in overseeing the rehabilitation of players like Shami. His current contract is set to expire in September, but he will remain in charge, ensuring continuity at the academy during this crucial period.
