Pomponi Clean Sheet Leads Lions Past Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tyger Smalls notched his third goal of the season in the first minute of the match, Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi saved a penalty and the Lions defeated Oregon State 2-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore.

LMU got started with a bang when Pomponi booted a deep ball that Okeefe Cunningham nicked over the top to a streaking Smalls. Smalls deftly finished around the goalkeeper for the early lead.

Pomponi was busy on the day. After the Lions netted early, the focus was on defense and clearing any dangerous chances. LMU did just that with clearances coming from across the board. Pomponi was the centerpiece, however. The senior from Eugene, Ore. flew around the box, claiming and punching crosses, directing traffic and making impressive saves throughout the afternoon to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.

No save was bigger than the penalty save Pomponi had in the 45th minute. After a foul was called in the box following a lofted through ball, Pomponi held his line and lunged to his left on the kick. He got both hands to the ball before the Lions could clear downfield.

He kept that energy going in the second half to complete the clean sheet.

With the Lions focusing on defending for most of the second half, the Beavers enjoyed the majority of possession and a 20-4 shot advantage. Only six of their shots were on target, however, and Pomponi was keen on stopping each one.

LMU extended the lead in the 62nd minute after Lewis Clutton won a free kick in the Beaver half. Steven Anderson delivered and inch-perfect ball to Jovan Prado who nodded in across goal and left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The Lions had two shots on goal in the match and they both went in.

Late in the second half, the Beavers had a good attack going and a shot was fired that deflected off the post and crossbar before Pomponi could swipe it away and Christian Ortiz could boot it clear of danger. The Beavers pleaded for a goal, but none was given.

LMU will travel back up north to face Gonzaga on Saturday, September 30. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT) and will be live streamed on ESPN+.
