Popular European restaurant Epocha announces it is closing down

A popular restaurant in Melbourne’s north is closing its doors after 12 years.

The owners of Epocha on Rathdowne St in Carlton said the decision was made with “a mix of heavy hearts and deep gratitude”.

“Epocha will be closing its doors after 12 remarkable years of service,” Angie Giannakodakis and Guy Holder announced via social media on Thursday afternoon.

“Since opening in 2012, Epocha has been more than just a restaurant, it has been a place where we’ve seen all the things humans go through.”

Giannakodakis and Holder cited two reasons for the closure: the old building which houses the restaurant is up for sale, and “broader economic challenges”.

“The decision to close has not been easy,” they said.

“We feel now is the right time to end this era.”

Longtime fans of the European restaurant fondly recalled memories of the venue.

“I have left Melbourne now but we couldn’t have got through lockdowns without your support of fabulous food and drinks,” one person said.

Another said: “Absolutely shattered. Epocha has been such a wonderful place of escape and merriment and will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

Epocha’s last day will be September 14.

Until then, it will host special events such as wine tastings, Monday hospo nights and a special final dinner service to go out with a bang.
