President likely to take part in Puri Rath Yatra festival on July 7 | India News

BHUBANESWAR: President Droupadi Murmu is likely to attend Rath Yatra in Puri on July 7, sources in the state government said on Wednesday. The Rashtrapati Bhavan has informed the government about her tentative four-day visit to Odisha, starting from July 6.
“We have started our security-related preparations after receiving her tentative schedule. Detailed consultations with officials, inspection of the areas where she would visit and route plans are being made,” commissioner of police Sanjeeb Panda said.
This is perhaps the first time the country’s president would attend the Puri Rath Yatra, sources in the Jagannath Temple administration said.As per her tentative schedule, the president is likely to attend a public meeting at Jayadev Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on July 6 evening. The next day she would visit Puri to watch the Rath Yatra procession. On July 8, she is likely to visit Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves in Bhubaneswar and attend a function at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Jatni the next day.
Police said it will be a testing time for them to make massive security arrangements for the president in Puri during the mega festival, which is likely to attract nearly a million devotees. “Since the president’s visit coincides with Rath Yatra, we will definitely face challenges with regard to force deployment, both for her programmes and the festival. Route lining and sanitisation of her routes will be a challenge. Still, her security is our priority,” a senior police official in Puri said.
In a related development, state law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, along with some other ministers, IAS and IPS officers, reviewed the Rath Yatra preparations in Puri on Wednesday. Harichadan sought the cooperation of servitors for smooth conduct of rituals. The minister also directed different departments to provide basic amenities to devotees. “Since the rituals of Nabajouban Darshan and Netra Utsav will be performed on the same day as the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are pulled on July 7, we expect a delay in the pulling of chariots. There have been instances where chariots were pulled a day after Rath Yatra. We are ready with our security and crowd control plans,” Puri SP Pinak Mishra said
