Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix docu-series trailer slammed

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex dropped their highly anticipated documentary trailer overnight – and responses have been mixed.

While criticism is expected when it comes to the couple, one particular detail detracted from a “heartbreaking” moment in the minute-long trailer.

The Duchess of Sussex can be seen sitting with her head in her hand, crying as she receives news via a video call.

But the Hermes blanket and designer accessories around her left a bitter taste in some viewers’ mouths.

The Morning Show’s entertainment editor Peter Ford remarked there is “nothing more heartbreaking than seeing Meghan in tears on her $3000 Hermes blanket”.

Social media users were also quick to notice the detail.

“The imagery of Meghan crying directly in front of a blanket by Hermes is not lost on me,” one user said.

“Not Meghan crying for sympathy in front of a $1,300 Hermes blanket,” a tweet said.

“That’s more than my salary, get over yourself. This is just senseless and unnecessary,” an Instagram user wrote.

Also rattling some royal fans was the timing of the trailer’s release – hours after the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Boston.

Convenient timing

William and Catherine are in the US to promote the prince’s environmental prize.

The couple made an appearance hours after the release, smiling and appearing unbothered by the bombshell trailer in which they appear in a photo, looking solemn next to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“I love how they drop the trailer for this the day Prince William and Catherine come to America,” an Instagram user began.

“Nothing says love of family like the competition for attention and trying to out stage and have motives like these two …”

“Of course this was just released. Prince and Princess of Wales have started their three-day visit to the US. Can’t let them have too much publicity,” another agreed.

“How fitting these photos are released at the same time the Prince and Princess of Wales are in the States – they have such poor form, always trying out do the elegant royals from the UK. Shame on you,” a third said.

In the bombshell trailer Prince Harry said, “no one sees what’s happening behind closed doors,” explaining everything he has done is to “protect my family”.

Meghan is later shown saying, “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”

‘Feeling forced’

Netflix refers to it as “an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series”.

“Across six episodes, the series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution,” a press release for the series states.

“With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other.”

Although Netflix ends the trailer simply with “coming soon”, it is set to hit the streaming giant in a week.
