A posh Los Angeles-based restaurant known for its A-list celebrity following has opened its first Bay Area outpost.
Michelin-recognized Sushi by Scratch, which is part of the Scratch Restaurants Group family, debuted at The Matheson restaurant in Healdsburg on Dec. 1. Like its other California outposts, the Bay Area Sushi by Scratch location evokes a speakeasy, tucked within a private room inside The Matheson.
In a press release, Sushi by Scratch chef-owners Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee shared that the decision to open their first Bay Area site was simple given “that Healdsburg has become the epicenter of luxury hospitality in California’s Wine Country.”

Sushi by Scratch, which also has locations in Los Angeles and Montecito, offers a 17-course nigiri tasting priced at $185 per person that highlights hamachi, seared albacore and a popular eel nigiri made with roasted bone marrow fat. A selection of cocktails, sake, Japanese whiskey and beers are also available on the drink menu.
Alas, booking a reservation at Sushi by Scratch might require some legwork. The restaurant only offers three reservation slots, at 4 p.m., 6:15 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. The intimate dining space serves no more than 10 guests at a time. Eventually, Sushi by Scratch plans to open daily for service.
The chic sushi restaurant is known for serving a roster of top celebrities that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz and Dave Chappelle. A spokesperson for Scratch Restaurants told SFGATE that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are also regulars with a penchant for the Montecito outpost, which held a Michelin star in 2021 and 2022.
