In “Diana: The Portrait,” Princess Diana’s makeup artist Barbara Daly claimed that on the day of her wedding, the royal accidentally spilled some Quelques Fleurs perfume on her dress.
However, according to insiders, Diana quickly covered the front of her dress to hide the mark.
Diana’s iconic wedding dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, was a 1980s-style poofy Princess bridal gown.
The dress, which cost £151,000, was made of ivory silk taffeta and featured a record-breaking 25-foot train, as well as 10,000 mother-of-pearl sequins and pearl embellishments.
Ms. Daly explained that Diana was just trying to apply her favorite perfume, Quelques Fleurs, when it accidentally splashed onto her wedding dress.
Since this happened right before the wedding ceremony, Diana simply covered the spot with her hand when she entered St Paul’s Cathedral.
In her book, “Diana: The Portrait,” Ms. Daly provided more details, stating that she advised Diana to act as if she was lifting the front of her dress to avoid stepping on it.
The makeup artist advised against revealing a stain on what would later become one of history’s most famous wedding dresses.
The perfume that Diana accidentally spilled was her favorite scent, Quelques Fleurs.
This fragrance, launched in 1912 by the Parisian perfume house Houbigant, features notes of jasmine, rose, and bergamot. It is still available for purchase for £186 per bottle.
On July 29, 1981, Diana was getting ready for her wedding at Clarence House in central London, where her then-fiancé resided.
Diana, who was only 19 years old at the time, likely experienced pre-wedding jitters.
Fortunately for Diana, the stain on her wedding dress went mostly unnoticed by the 3,500 guests inside the cathedral and the 750 million people watching from home.
Later, Princess Diana changed into a beautiful pink dress as she embarked on her honeymoon with Prince Charles.
The couple remained married for 11 years before separating in 1992 and ultimately divorcing in 1996.
