All eyes will be on the Bay Area’s own Sofia Coppola next month when she brings her new film “Priscilla,” a biopic about Elvis Presley’s wife, to the Mill Valley Film Festival.
The Mill Valley Film Festival will be a homecoming of sorts for Coppola, who grew up in nearby Napa. Her father, legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, has been involved in the wine industry for decades. “Priscilla,” which is scheduled to be presented at the festival on Oct. 11, is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the upcoming awards season. The film stars Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley and “Euphoria’s” Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.

Austin Butler, another actor who knows something about portraying Elvis, is also set to be featured in a film at the festival. From director Jeff Nichols, “The Bikeriders” focuses on a motorcycle gang in the 1960s. Along with Butler, the film stars Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon and Jodie Comer. “The Bikeriders” is scheduled to be shown Oct. 9 and again on Oct. 14.
The festival is slated to open Oct. 5 with a screening of “Day of the Fight,” a boxing movie starring Michael Pitt, best known for his role in the Emmy-winning HBO show “Boardwalk Empire.” “Day of the Fight” also stars Ron Perlman and Oscar-winner Joe Pesci.

Director Todd Haynes and producer Christine Vachon are slated to be honored with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement for Collaboration award. Haynes and Vachon will be in attendance to screen their new picture, “May December,” in which Natalie Portman plays an actress tasked with portraying a housewife who had a relationship with an underage boy. Portman’s character spends time with the housewife, played by Julianne Moore, but the situation quickly grows more complicated. The film is scheduled to be screened on Oct. 12 and again on Oct. 13.
The festival concludes Oct. 15 with a surprise screening. Organizers were coy with the details but told patrons to “mark your calendars and secure your tickets now; you don’t want to miss out on a Closing Night that promises to be an unforgettable experience.”
Tickets are on sale for film festival members now. Nonmembers can buy tickets starting on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and can view the complete schedule and list of films now.
