Pune Hospital conducts first-ever Bone Conduction hearing implants

New Delhi: The Department of Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) at Command Hospital (Southern Command) in Pune has successfully conducted the first piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implants, a PIB press release stated. This has made it the first government hospital in the country to procure and conduct the implants.

The implants were conducted on a seven-year-old male child suffering from severe hearing loss and one adult with single-sided deafness.

The cost of the hearing implants is quite high, making it difficult for many patients to afford it. This is why the Command Hospital has decided to conduct the implants for free to patients with conductive loss and mixed hearing loss who are not candidates for cochlear implantation and do not benefit from hearing aids or middle ear surgery. The piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implant system is an implantable medical device that is used to help hearing-impaired patients.

The device consists of a series of electrical components that are connected to the patient’s ear osskeleton. This helps in converting sound waves into electrical signals that can be heard by the patient. The implants are able to provide hearing benefits for patients who have suffered from severe hearing loss due to congenital external and middle ear anomalies.

The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) has congratulated the Command Hospital (SC) on the successful conduct of the bone conduction hearing implants. This is a significant milestone in the healthcare system, as it has now become possible to provide hearing augmentation devices to patients with severe hearing loss who are not candidates for cochlear implantation. The implants will help these patients to improve their hearing quality and live more fulfilling lives.
