Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter previews Monday’s game vs. Iowa
Purdue will try to bounce back after its first loss when Iowa comes to Mackey Arena on Monday.
Purdue basketball hosts Iowa in its Big Ten home opener after starting conference play with an overtime loss.
The Boilermakers (7-1) lost for the second straight season at Northwestern as the nation’s top-ranked team, 92-88 in overtime. Zach Edey (35 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) and Braden Smith (12 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 6 turnovers) didn’t get enough scoring help from their teammates. Edey (23.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.9 blocked shots for the season) leads Purdue, along with Smith (12.9 points, 45.8% 3-pointers, 6.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.8 steals), Fletcher Loyer (10.8 points, 37.1% 3-pointers) and Lance Jones (10.3 points, 2.1 assists).
The Hawkeyes (5-2) are making their conference debut. Valparaiso transfer Ben Krikke leads the Hawkeyes (18.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals), followed by Payton Sandfort (14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 15 3-pointers), Lawrence North High School alum Tony Perkins (12.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists) and Patrick McCaffery (12.0 points, 36.8% 3FGs). Their losses are to Creighton and Oklahoma.
The teams met once last season, with Purdue winning 87-73 in West Lafayette behind Smith’s 24 points.
Player ratings: Zach Edey can’t do it alone
What’s the issue?: If Purdue doesn’t fix turnovers, NCAA tournament could be another early exit
