The charity, started by mum Sophie Smith, has raised more than $6 million and given almost 10,000 premature babies a better chance of survival.
Gillespie spoke about how his own twin daughters, Lottie and Lulu, spent a week in neonatal care after being born early three years ago.
“It was just a week, nothing like what some of these little little babies are going through,” he said.
“But yet there’s such an insight into it.
“There was a baby there, at the time the girls were there, that have been there for months, months and months in these amazing machines.
“So yeah, we’re very lucky, but it does show you how important this is.”
Gillespie said he and an “army” of kids and parents are joining he and Smith in the City2Surf to raise funds for Running For Premature Babies.
“One of [the parents who is running] has just got a three-week-old baby in hospital at the moment,” he said.
“Amazing people come together to run for Running For Premature Babies do the City2Surf and raise money the same time.
He added: “These little tiny ones are in the humidicribs and they come and raise money and and just keep going.
“And because of Sophie’s dedication to Running For Premature Babies, there is so much equipment in the hospitals now to help little babies survive, which is amazing.”
Runnings For Premature Babies are hoping to raise $100,000, which will go towards paying for a humidicrib for the Sydney Children’s Hospital at West
