QLD couple takes aim at QLD premier after wedding reception cancelled by Gold Coast hotel due to AFL hub
A couple say they’re heartbroken after being told their wedding reception booking at a Gold Coast hotel has been cancelled to make way for AFL clubs.
The bride, who did not want to be named, said she was due to celebrate her wedding at the Novotel Surfers Paradise on July 24.
But on Thursday, she received call from the hotel saying the booking had been cancelled, so the venue can be used as a COVID quarantine hub for the AFL.
“I received a phone call yesterday to let me know that that could need to be cancelled, because it’s being used for AFL players,” she told 7NEWS.
“It’s heartbreaking. I’m absolutely devastated. We were looking forward to celebrating with all our friends and family and now it’s just nothing.”
She said she was initially offered a full refund by the hotel.
Management has now offered to host the ceremony – but not reception – and provide two nights of free accommodation to the couple at a later date.
She took aim at Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for allowing AFL teams to set up hubs in the state.
“I don’t think weddings and things should be cancelled just to keep a sport going,” the bride said.
“She (Palaszczuk) puts sport before Queenslanders … It’s not fair.
“Not knowing what’s next, that’s the worst part.”
A Novotel spokesperson said management is working with the bride to “find a suitable resolution”.
“We continue to reach out to each guest directly and are addressing their needs on a case by case basis,” the spokesperson said.
“We are asking any patrons who have booked with us to please reach out to us on our reservation line if they would like to discuss their booking.”
Earlier this week, it was revealed guests of another couple’s wedding party had their accommodation bookings cancelled at the Novotel Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast, for the venue to become a hub for the NRL season.
It’s understood the AFL has not finalised any plans for a Gold Coast quarantine hub.
Eight teams are set to play on the Gold Coast this weekend – Brisbane, Richmond, the Gold Coast, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon, Greater Western Sydney and Sydney.
