Radhika Gupta: Shark Tank India judge Radhika Gupta on why depression is rising amongst youngsters |

Edelweiss Mutual Fund MD and CEO, and Shark Tank India judge Radhika Gupta is quite a popular name among the masses. From financial planning to work-life balance, Radhika often shares her views on social media with her fans and followers. More recently, the Edelweiss Mutual Fund MD and CEO, and Shark Tank India judge took to social media wherein she spoke about the rise in depression cases among youngsters these days.Sharing her opinion, Radhika said that one of the major reasons for depression in youth these days is the fake and perfect life people often project on social media.
The handle @billionair_key asked a question on X that read: In your opinion, why do you think so many young people are depressed?. Replying to it, Radhika tweeted, “The pressure of being someone because their life looks cool on Instagram, rather than being your unique self.”
And we agree with Radhika, that this is also one of the reasons for growing depression and anxiety among the youth today. The reason: People often only post about the rosy part of their life, withholding the true and ugly sides. This creates a false impression that their life is quite happy and perfect, which might make their friends and followers compare their life and struggles and feel bad for themselves. Such social comparisons also lead to envy and FOMO (fear of missing out)– a pervasive anxiety that others are having fun and are happy that you are missing out on. Social media often amplifies this fear, as people are bombarded with updates and photos of events, gatherings, and activities they are not part of, leading to feelings of loneliness and inadequacy. All of this could potentially lead to anxiety and depression in the long run.
Meanwhile, according to a report by UNICEF, one in every seven Indian youth aged between 15 to 24 years are depressed. This highlights the importance of creating mental health awareness, particularly among youngsters.
A few days ago, Radhika also shared how she balances her work and life, considering that the CEO is also a mum to a toddler. Sharing her insights on this, Radhika posted a video from an event wherein her son went up to the stage just when she was about to give a speech.
“I am probably asked about work-life balance at every forum and stage. And I always say the best way to describe it is beautiful chaos. And this is what beautiful chaos looks like. When you go to Bangalore for a working weekend and have to take the kiddo along. And just as you are ready to start speaking, Baby Shark looks up to the stage and makes his move. Because the person on stage is not CEO or Shark, but first Mama and always Mama. And so he makes his move. And finance and snuggles mix themselves just like that,” Radhika wrote in the caption along with a cute video of her son.
